[Almost] Complete OBIEE timeline [so far]

Update 29 November 2016 Added dates of end of error correction support. Update 12 December 2016 Added dates of end of error correction support for 12.2. Update 09 May 2017 All versions and patches are up to date. Recently I started to spend significantly more time at OTN forums. And what I have realised that often people don't understand how old versions of the software they use are. It's pretty typical to use OBIEE 11.1.1.6.x or even 11.1.1.5. Well, I knew this before, but when you can see tens of questions it makes the situation more obvious. I'm going to maintain a list of OBIEE versions with release dates in this post,…

Oracle Map builder simple map

Today I'm going to show how to create a very simple map based on the OSM data loaded into a Oracle Database. I use Germany OSM data for this guide. The root post if this series is: Maps starting post. It has links to other posts of this series. The first step is to download a Map Builder tool for building a map. It's available on the "Software Downloads for Oracle Fusion Middleware MapViewer" page. After downloading and unpacking the archive, I got three jar-files. The only tool I use in this post is mapbuilder.jar. You need java installed to run it. It's possible to run it either by double-clicking or using a command line, depending on your machine…

Importing OSM Geofabrik data into Oracle database with GDAL/OGR

This post is the third in line of posts about Maps generally and Open Street Maps in particular. The previous one concentrates on building ogr2org on Linux platform, and this post is about using this tool. As this tool is not something completely new and unknown, there is a lot of information on different aspects of using it. So my task isn't to write a comprehensive guide on this topic, but only to highlight a few points and give a general understanding of this tool. And in this post, I will load OSM data into Oracle Database. Source data For my experiments I took a few .osm.pbf files from Geofabrik. My choice was based purely on the size of…

Maps starting post

Preface This post starts a series of posts about using GIS data for visualizing an information in OBIEE. I don't know how many of them will be and how much time will it take to write. Right now the plan is the following: Announce/contents [this post] Building GDAL/OGR with required features. Basics of using of GDAL/OGR to load OpenStreetMaps data into Oracle. Creating Layers/Maps with Oracle Map Builder Setup Mapviewer Setup OBIEE Using maps and layers for creating Analysis (very basic). [coming someday] That's the plan, but it's possible that other topics will emerge, or some of these will split or disappear, or something else will happen. I will update this post to reflect all changes.…

OBIEE: HTML5 charts instead of flash charts

A few days ago many people have faced problems with playing flash content in their browsers. OBIEE [by default] uses flash for showing charts so your dashboards have started to look like this: Senior Firefox Support Lead Mark Schmidt wrote in Twitter: BIG NEWS!! All versions of Flash are blocked by default in Firefox as of now. https://t.co/4SjVoqKPrR #tech #infosec pic.twitter.com/VRws3L0CBW— Mark Schmidt (@MarkSchmidty) 14 июля 2015 The same happened in Chrome and Opera. Right now there are new versions of flash available for most (possible all) browsers so you can simply update the flash plugin and continue to use everything as usual. But you never know when the same will happen again.…

OBIEE 11.1.1.7 to 11.1.1.9 upgrade

OBIEE 11.1.1.9 was released on May 15, 2015 and has a few interesting new features. It is the first (and possibly the last) major release in the last couple of years. From my point of view, it isn't a revolution but evolution of the 11.1.1.7.x branch. It's very easy to upgrade existing 11.1.1.7.x instance to 11.1.1.9.0 and involves the following steps: Download OBIEE 11.1.1.9.0 distributive Determine currently used Weblogic server release Download Weblogic 10.3.6 upgrade installer [optional] Upgrade Weblogic to 10.3.6 [optional] Upgrade OBIEE software Upgrade database repository (MDS and BIPLATFORM) Upgrade various system components Download OBIEE…

Oracle Mobile App Designer simple report

Today I'll show how to create a very simple Oracle Business Intelligence Mobile App Designer (BIMAD) report. For this demonstration, I use the sample repository shipped with OBIEE. Login to OBIEE as usual. Navigate to Home page and select Mobile app in Create section. The first decision you need to make is the type of your application (report). You can create either Phone or Tablet application. For my demo I choose Phone and press Next button. Next step is selecting the data source for you report. For this demo, I choose the easiest way and select BI Subject Area option. I use Sample Sales Lite subject area. Using BI Subject Area isn't the best option or something like that. It's…

Oracle Business Intelligence and Cloudera Impala configuration

It's pretty easy to find a guide for connecting OBI EE to Cloudera's Impala when OBI EE is installed on MS Windows. But I haven't found any guides for Linux platform. So, here it is. Steps to connect OBI EE to Cloudera Impala when OBI EE is installed on Linux are the following: Download ODBC drivers Install and configure ODBC drivers on Linux (server side) Install and configure ODBC drivers on Windows (client side) Create and configure physical layer of repository Downloading ODBC drivers All the drivers you need are located on Cloudera's website and are available for download for free. Go to Download Cloudera Connectors page and select "Impala Drivers & Connectors". Click ODBC. Locate and download drivers for…
