OBIEE Windows 10 installation tips

Warning Windows 10 is not a supported platform for any OBIEE installation. Following this guide is on your own responsibility. For testing or educational purposes only.

While Windows 10 is not an officially supported platform for OBIEE 11g it's currently most advanced Microsoft OS. Free one-year migration from Windows 7 and 8.1 prompts suggestion that many developers will have to install OBIEE 11g server on their workstations. I hope Oracle will support Windows 10 in the future releases. There are a couple of tricks needed for installing OBIEE on Windows 10 right now.

I believe that general installation path is well known for you. If not you may see my post Oracle Business Intelligence 11g installation guide (Linux). Windows installation is basically the same. If you want to install OBIEE on windows 10 you should do the following:

Microsoft loopback adapter

The first trick is to install a Microsoft loopback adapter and assign static IP to this interface. It's not a real trick as a documentation says to do it. But it is something not easy to find in the documentation and very easy to forget to do.

I don't have enough statistics yet, but without loopback adapter on my machine. an installation was freezing at the Starting Managed Server: biserver1 step of a configuration process. The biserver1.log file was showing this error:

<1438718226706> <BEA-090402> <Authentication denied: Boot identity not valid; The user name and/or password from the boot identity file (boot.properties) is not valid.
The boot identity may have been changed since the boot identity file was created. Please edit and update the boot identity file with the proper values of username and password.
The first time the updated boot identity file is used to start the server, these new values are encrypted.>

Windows 7 compatibility mode

The second trick is that setup.exe should be started in Windows 7 compatibility mode. It's possible that Vista or XP modes will also do fine, but I haven't checked them.

The explanation for this trick was in my previous post: OBIEE on Windows 10: not a guide.

That's all. This two (one and a half) tricks helped me to successfully install OBIEE 11.1.1.9.0 on Windows 10.
