[Almost] Complete OBIEE timeline [so far]

Update 29 November 2016 Added dates of end of error correction support. Update 12 December 2016 Added dates of end of error correction support for 12.2. Update 09 May 2017 All versions and patches are up to date. Recently I started to spend significantly more time at OTN forums. And what I have realised that often people don't understand how old versions of the software they use are. It's pretty typical to use OBIEE 11.1.1.6.x or even 11.1.1.5. Well, I knew this before, but when you can see tens of questions it makes the situation more obvious. I'm going to maintain a list of OBIEE versions with release dates in this post,…

OBIEE and BI Publisher web service

Today's post is inspired by this question from OTN forums: https://community.oracle.com/thread/3943615. Topic starter tried to invoke a BI Publisher (XML Publisher) web service from OBIEE using an Action, and something went wrong. But the same web service worked fine when he invoked it with the same parameters using a third party tool. I'm not sure that this use case is important, but it was very interesting for me to find out what causes this behaviour and is it possible to change it. I've started from the very beginning and confirmed that everything works (or should I say doesn't work?) exactly as topic starter said. Works perfectly with Altova XMLSpy: Request Response Gives java.lang.NullPointerException…

OBIEE 12c and OSM. OBIEE setup.

This is a finishing post in the series about using the OpenStreetMap data with OBIEE 12c. Actually, I have a few more ideas, but they aren't for a short term perspective. This post describes how to setup OBIEE 12c (but this information is also applicable to 11g) and some map tweaks as well. Let's start with OBIEE part. Log in to http://yourserver:9502/analytics (9502 - default port). Navigate to Admistration/Manage Map Data Now we need to create some layers to display data and define which tile layers should be used to expose them. Go to Layers tab and click Create button. It is in the top right corner. Here we can see all layers from the database…

OBIEE 12c and OSM. MapViewer setup.

The previous post in the OSM/Spatial series was finished on a simple map of Germany. And it's time to use this map in OBIEE. This post describes how to setup the MapViewer, and the next one how to tweak the map and setup OBIEE. So, let's start. Login to the MapViewer Administration console. The address is http://yourhost:9502/mapviewer (9502 - default port). The first thing we need to configure is a connection to a database which stores a spatial data. It is done by editing MapViewer config file. Select the Configuration tab and then Mapviewer. Locate the Predefined Data Sources section. There is a template for a connection in the config file. It is commnted out by…

First look at the Windows 10 Linux subsystem

A few days ago Microsoft announced coming of Ubuntu Linux on Windows 10. While I'm not a Linux fanboy, most of the servers I'm responsible for work on Linux system. And Linux has plenty of features I like and miss on my Windows machine. So it was impossible to pass by this feature. Right now Linux subsystem is available only for members of the Windows Insider program. Windows should be upgraded to the latest 14316 preview build. And a few additional steps should be done. The first one is to turn this feature on. Go to the Control panel. Open Programs. Click Turn Windows features on or off. Turn on Windows Subsystem for Linux (Beta). I'm not sure about this…

Oracle Map builder simple map

Today I'm going to show how to create a very simple map based on the OSM data loaded into a Oracle Database. I use Germany OSM data for this guide. The root post if this series is: Maps starting post. It has links to other posts of this series. The first step is to download a Map Builder tool for building a map. It's available on the "Software Downloads for Oracle Fusion Middleware MapViewer" page. After downloading and unpacking the archive, I got three jar-files. The only tool I use in this post is mapbuilder.jar. You need java installed to run it. It's possible to run it either by double-clicking or using a command line, depending on your machine…

Importing OSM Geofabrik data into Oracle database with GDAL/OGR

This post is the third in line of posts about Maps generally and Open Street Maps in particular. The previous one concentrates on building ogr2org on Linux platform, and this post is about using this tool. As this tool is not something completely new and unknown, there is a lot of information on different aspects of using it. So my task isn't to write a comprehensive guide on this topic, but only to highlight a few points and give a general understanding of this tool. And in this post, I will load OSM data into Oracle Database. Source data For my experiments I took a few .osm.pbf files from Geofabrik. My choice was based purely on the size of…

GDAL/OGR with OCI support on Linux

This is a second post of the Maps series. It describes how to build a GDAL/OGR tool. GDAL - Geospatial Data Abstraction Library GDAL is a translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats that is released under an X/MIT style Open Source licence by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation. As a library, it presents a single raster abstract data model and vector abstract data model to the calling application for all supported formats. It also comes with a variety of useful command line utilities for data translation and processing. In a nutshell, GDAL/OGR is a library and a set of command line tools for manipulating geo data. It is used as a library in many…

Maps starting post

Preface This post starts a series of posts about using GIS data for visualizing an information in OBIEE. I don't know how many of them will be and how much time will it take to write. Right now the plan is the following: Announce/contents [this post] Building GDAL/OGR with required features. Basics of using of GDAL/OGR to load OpenStreetMaps data into Oracle. Creating Layers/Maps with Oracle Map Builder Setup Mapviewer Setup OBIEE Using maps and layers for creating Analysis (very basic). [coming someday] That's the plan, but it's possible that other topics will emerge, or some of these will split or disappear, or something else will happen. I will update this post to reflect all changes.…

OBIEE 12c remote repository download/upload

One of the most interesting features of OBIEE 12c is an ability to download/upload a repository with command-line utility without using OEM and the best part of all: without restarting of an Analytics server! But when I tried to use it and upload a repository from my developer workstation to a server, I've faced two issues. Disclaimer. This post is a result of my personal investigation. It's neither documented nor supported by Oracle. Following this guide is on your own responsibility. Update Dec 12, 2015 This is now documented: 1.2.4 Error When Running data-model-cmd.cmd Launcher Script. The bug 22095286 BI-LCM TOOLS NOT WORKING FROM CLIENT INSTALLATION will be fixed in 12.2.3 (My Oracle Support)…
